The filings with fixed calendar dates, grouped by month, then every state's notice rule in one table. Dates come from the same verified data as our state law pages. Districts sometimes set their own dates on top of these, so treat this as the map, not the territory.

The fixed dates, month by month

New York: Letter of intent

Notify the district by July 1 (or within 14 days if you start mid-year).

Pennsylvania: Affidavit & objectives

A notarized affidavit plus educational objectives, filed with the superintendent.

Virginia: Evidence of progress

A standardized test (4th stanine or higher) or an evaluation letter.

New York: Home instruction plan (IHIP)

Filed within four weeks of the district materials, or by August 15, whichever is later.

Notice rules for every state

Most deadlines are relative ("within 30 days of starting") rather than a calendar date. Here is the notice rule for all 50 states and DC. Click through for the full picture.

Alaska	None required by the state
Arizona	One-time affidavit of intent, filed with the county.
Arkansas	Annual notice of intent, by August 15.
California	Annual private school affidavit (Oct 1-15), or use an umbrella/PSP.
Colorado	Notice of intent 14 days before starting, then annually. Test results go to the district.
Connecticut	None required by the state
Delaware	Register and report attendance via the DOE. Enrollment statement due Sept 30.
District of Columbia	Notify OSSE 15 business days before starting, then annually by Aug 15.
Florida	Notice of intent within 30 days of starting.
Georgia	Declaration of intent to the Georgia DOE by Sept 1, then annually.
Hawaii	One-time notice of intent to the principal, then an annual progress report.
Idaho	None required by the state
Illinois	None required by the state
Indiana	None required by the state

Kansas	Register a school name with the state board.
Kentucky	Annual notice to the local board, within the first two weeks.
Louisiana	Application within 15 days, renewed annually by Oct 1.
Maine	Annual notice to the local school and commissioner; yearly assessment.
Maryland	Notice 15 days before starting, then annually.
Massachusetts	District-approved plan required before starting.
Michigan	None required by the state
Minnesota	Annual report by Oct 1; fuller report the first year.
Mississippi	Annual certificate of enrollment by Sept 15.

Three habits that make deadlines painless

File early, keep proof. Send notices with delivery confirmation or hand them in and ask for a stamped copy. A folder of dated receipts settles most disagreements before they start.

Work backward from the evaluation. In states like Pennsylvania and New York, the year-end review is the real deadline. Portfolios and quarterly reports are much easier to assemble from records you kept along the way than from memory in June.

Put next year's dates in your calendar now. The August rush is real. The families who feel calm in August put the reminders in place the previous fall.
